How to Write the Perfect Instagram Bio

Social media plays a huge part in today's society. It's the perfect resource to virtually connect with someone, and we all know it’s the best way to advertise for free! Now that Instagram has become a place to showcase your products and services, it’s important to use your Instagram bio to tell people who you are and what you do.

So, we want to ask you these five questions: WHO are you? WHAT are you trying to achieve? WHERE do you want to be? HOW do you plan to get there? And WHY do you want this? If you can answer all five of these questions, bravo! Pat yourselves on the back! If you couldn’t answer all five of those questions, don’t worry! We’re going to tell you exactly how to write a cohesive, assertive, (and of course, pretty) Instagram bio!

An Instagram bio is like an elevator pitch. You only have 150 characters to tell someone who you are, what you do, and how you can serve them all while leaving them with a great first impression! Your Instagram bio may seem straightforward, but it requires creative strategy.

The PR Dolls can help you create your Perfect Instagram Bio! Here are a few methods to a Perfect Instagram Bio in 150 characters or less!

  1. Using Keywords in Your Instagram Bio

When creating your Instagram bio, you will want to make sure your name is optimized in the name field along with keywords that promote your business. Sound confusing? Don’t overthink it! We’ll use our Boss Doll + CEO, @thecarolinedoll as an example:

  1. Caroline Kalentzos, Boss Doll + CEO @poshpr

  2. Caroline Kalentzos - Fashion Infused Lifestyle Blogger

It can be tempting to just put something like “Richmond VA Lifestyle Blogger” in the name field, especially when you have that character limit. But hear us out! When people are looking for YOU specifically, it’s so, so important that your name is clearly visible! Your name is also how you show up in someone’s DMs, so have something like “Richmond VA Lifestyle Blogger” instead of “Caroline Kalentzos” can get pretty confusing in someone’s inbox!

You’ll want to use keywords in your bio as well. Let’s say you’re a bakery who specializes in the most authentic, homemade goods. You’ll want to add keywords such as pastries, sweets, authentic, and delicious homemade goods! (This is just an example.) Keywords will be different for every brand depending on their values, services, and overall goals!

2. Use Your Instagram Bio to Capture Your Ideal Client

Of course, a bio wouldn’t be a bio without including the services/education you offer! This will be different for each business/brand. When adding this to your bio, you don’t need to tell the user your entire life story. With just 150 characters, this is more of a blurb!

Highlight the main things your Instagram will showcase and who it’s for (*ahem* your ideal audience!) For example, we will use our Content Creation Doll, Emma Manis’s business, @shopevolve! Her brand is an online e-commerce store that provides clothing in every size. If you look closely, @shopevolve states their services, what they offer, and includes a hashtag + website! This type of bio is straightforward: Not too wordy and not too short. It tells you exactly what their brand is and let’s you decide if their products spark an interest for you.

Evolve also utilizes a few branded hashtags, #BeautyHasNoLimits and #EVOLVEAngels. Why are hashtags so important? Well, it makes it easier for users to explore a specific theme or content. Adding a few hashtags in your bio can’t hurt! This helps drive engagement. Users can follow hashtags, therefore if you add in hashtags whether it’s in your bio or in the comment section, this will help your brand stay consistent with its post and brand!

3. Utilize the Contact Form

We absolutely love the contact feature on business Instagram bios! It makes it super easy for your followers and potential customers/clients to reach you! But remember, you can only add a contact page to your Instagram if you are set to a business account.

When adding your contact page, you will want to make sure your information is accurate! This includes the following: email address, phone number, and a physical or mailing address. You’ll want to double-check just in case any potential brands or businesses reach out. Oh, and the best part? The contact page does not take up any characters in your bio!

We can't forget this little piece of advice: One of the main things you'll want to add to your bio is your website link! If you have multiple links you want to share, there’s no need to fret! The PR Dolls have your back! Many people use Linktr.ee! Linktree is a great tool for you to connect all of your audience within one link! And it's free. Can't get much better than that!

4. Be Yourself in Your Bio

Don’t be afraid to show who you are, Dolls! Your Instagram is a platform to showcase your true self and those who like your content are there for a good time AND a long time! While it’s important to display your brand/business, it’s equally as important to show your personality, too! People love seeing behind the scenes, so don’t be afraid to share who you are as a creator. Plus, people feel more connected when you let them in. And by in, we mean by showing a little bit about YOU, not just your business!

A few more tips + tricks: it's a great idea to add line breaks and fun emojis to your bio! Line breaks make the bio easier to read and easier on the eyes. You can do this by typing in your bio in the Notes app. After you're happy with your result, simply copy and paste it into your bio! And of course, emojis are a great way to be playful and catch the eye more easily.

5. Show Your Best Self

Last but not least, your Instagram profile picture! You want to choose a profile photo that speaks to your brand and is easily identifiable. In most cases, your Instagram picture can be your logo or even just your pretty self! Either way, make sure it's a clean image so users become more familiar with your pretty brand!

And just like that, Dolls, you now have a perfect and pretty Instagram bio! Remember to stay consistent, tell your audience what you can do for them, stick to keywords, (it's literally the key to drive engagement!), and show off the Boss Doll you are! You know you aced it when someone clicks that follow button, so let's make sure it happens every time. Here is your new Instagram bio checklist:

  • Tell them who this Boss Doll is

  • Use specific keywords that relate to your pretty brand/business

  • Don't forget your website link(s)

  • Make sure all of your contact information is 100% correct

  • Show off that Boss Doll personality

We hope this helps, Dolls! And don't worry, you can always change your Instagram bio. This isn't a real elevator pitch, but if it was, you would know exactly what to say!
